Ancient Volcano

...and behind us you can now see the remains of the volcano. Yeah, I know, it looks like a hill, but trust me, it's an ancient volcano

The ruins!!!

and from there we walked across a ridge connect it to a mesa north of it at Latitude 34° 6'13.85"N Longitude 112° 7'59.88"W To our surprise, as we got close to it we saw a manmande wall on top of the mesa. As we got about 200 yards away I saw the back of something rather large running along the ledge just below the wall. Can't say for sure, but best hunch is that it was a cougar, but it may have been a fox. As luck would have it, I didn't have my pistol along because we planned on a much less strenuous and less remote hike. This photo was taken at about the spot where I saw the animal moving along the dark ledge below the wall.

Mesa in distance

Behind me on the left side of the picture is a mesa we are going to climb. What we can't see at this distance are the ruins of a man-made Indian wall on top

Volcanic dust

From the cone of the volcano....or what seems to be what is left of the eroded central tube of the volcano...we started to walk North across a ridge and here Judy is standing on an outcropping. In front of her is very fine volcanic ash, and behind her is a valley we are going to hike in tomorrow that runs between some mesas

LOST

We went on a hike this morning and made a wrong turn in the metropolis of Black Canyon City, population 3,000. So we ended up going North on I-17. Pulled off the highway, and just started hiking in the hills to the East of the highway. Turned out to be a very nice hike. First thing we came to is what I believe is the remnant of a small volcano at latitude 34° 5'52.45"N and Longitude 112° 7'59.28"W. This image shows the view looking East after we climbed up along the edge of what is left of the volcano.

Hike to Indian ruins

Well, after much avoidance, we have finally started a blog today. I have no experience with a blog, and so this will take a little getting used to for us. So, I'm going to start simple and begin with today, and then I can start to add stuff from earlier things. Day started out exciting as we found some free range cattle grazing next to the house. These are cattle which basically just wander all over feeding anywhere, but mostly they graze on BLM (Bureau of Land Management land, or what would be called Crown Land in Canada)
